Ancona is situated in central Italy on the
Adriatic coast
I thought I knew Italy well. (...) Although the region
of the Marches was never on the agenda, I doubted
I had missed much. Big mistake! Draw up a list of
all those wonderful reasons for going to Italy and
you'll find them in abundance in this barely known
back garden sandwiched between the Apennines and the
Adriatic. You could spend an entire holiday immersed
in Renaissance art and architecture, or simply slobbing
on Blue Flag beaches. Historic hill towns survey landscapes
cut and pasted from the backdrop of medieval masters.
There is a national park of mountains and a seemingly
endless stock of historic palaces, classical gardens,
nights at the opera and feasts of seafood and fine
wine. But the most amazing discovery of all is that,
unlike neighbouring Tuscany and Umbria, which suck
in the crowds like dust up a Dyson, the Marches is
almost a tourist desert. Most people haven't a clue
where it is, let alone what it's got. (...)
